Rays Acquire Taiwanese Infielder Tsung-Che Cheng, Bolstering Roster Depth

Instructions

The Tampa Bay Rays have strategically secured Taiwanese infielder Tsung-Che Cheng, claiming him from the Pittsburgh Pirates to finalize their 40-man roster. This acquisition is notable as Cheng's designation by the Pirates facilitated the return of Brandon Lowe, making Cheng an indirect yet crucial component of that transaction.

Cheng's journey to professional baseball began with his signing in 2019 for $380,000, though his on-field debut was delayed until 2021 due to global events. While he adapted smoothly to the minor league system initially, he encountered difficulties at the Double-A level in 2024. In response, Cheng dedicated himself to enhancing his physical strength, specifically targeting his ability to effectively hit high-velocity pitches. His defensive skills have been a consistent highlight, described by experts as dynamic and dedicated, frequently enabling him to successfully execute challenging plays.

His unanticipated call-up to the Pirates' main roster, prompted by an injury to Jared Triolo, fast-tracked his major league aspirations. Cheng marked his MLB debut on April 9, 2025, becoming the 18th player from Taiwan to achieve this milestone. His initial stint was brief, spanning three games across two series, where he registered no hits in seven at-bats, accumulating three strikeouts, and no walks or stolen bases before being reassigned to the minor leagues.

Following his brief taste of the major leagues, Cheng spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Indianapolis, playing 107 games, and a short period at High-A Bradenton. Across a total of 110 minor league appearances, he posted a batting line of .207/.305/.267, equivalent to a 62 wRC+. His season included one home run, 36 runs batted in, 12 doubles, 3 triples, and 20 stolen bases in 28 attempts. He recorded 101 strikeouts over 348 at-bats (24.9%) and drew 48 walks (11.8%).

Cheng's continued presence on the 40-man roster positions him as a potential asset for the Rays, particularly as an infield injury replacement in the future. His ability to maintain his roster spot will be key, as he is currently viewed as one of the players on the fringe, vital for providing organizational depth and flexibility.
