Traditionally, construction and agricultural settings are defined by their demanding nature—rugged, unyielding, and physically strenuous. These environments are fundamentally resistant to softness, often built upon principles of raw force and structural integrity. However, artist Pia Hinz boldly inverts this concept, delving into the intricate relationship between resilience and susceptibility through her chosen medium.
The Artist's Distinctive Approach to Stained Glass
Hinz has dedicated the last three years to mastering stained glass, an art form that allows her to imbue industrial and agrarian implements with a new, unexpected character. Her portfolio includes a diverse range of recognizable items: hammers, screws, traffic cones, tractor doors, scythes, and lengths of rope, all meticulously rendered in glass.
Challenging Perceptions: Fragility and Invincibility Intertwined
By reinterpreting these functional tools in glass, Hinz intentionally undermines their original purpose. Her work creates a paradox, where the inherent fragility of glass confronts the presumed invincibility of these objects. An exhibition statement from La Menuiserie 2, where Hinz completed a residency in 2024, eloquently describes this interplay: “Here, fragility and invincibility intertwine. By replacing functional materials with fragile ones, the artist questions our relationship to objects, their use value, and their narrative potential.”
The Interplay of Light and Space in Hinz's Creations
As light filters through Hinz’s glass pieces, it casts an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors onto the surrounding environment. Sculptures such as “MON PRÉCIEUX” and “Néon sacré” feature elegant, abstract geometric patterns, defined by intricate metal lines. For Hinz, this interaction is fundamental, an “urge to retrace the relation between light and space,” as she articulates.
Future Endeavors and Artistic Vision
Currently, Hinz is engaged in creating a permanent stained glass monument for a building in Paris, a testament to her growing influence and innovative artistic vision.
