In an effort to address the ongoing challenge of food insecurity, a new initiative has emerged in Las Vegas. The Obodo Collective, alongside the Southern Nevada Health District, inaugurated its produce store in the city's Historic Westside neighborhood on Saturday. This area has long struggled with limited access to fresh and nutritious food options. By establishing this greengrocer, the organization aims to provide residents with healthier choices while revitalizing the community. The store not only offers locally grown produce but also accepts SNAP benefits, ensuring affordability for all. With nearly 720 households within walking distance benefiting from this project, it represents a significant step towards improving food accessibility in underserved areas.
Historically, the Historic Westside of Las Vegas thrived with vibrant markets and eateries. However, economic downturns during the 1980s and 1990s led to a decline in local businesses. Claytee White, Director of Oral History Research Center at UNLV Libraries, highlighted how factors such as the crack cocaine epidemic and societal changes severely impacted the community. Today, food insecurity remains a pressing issue across the United States, affecting approximately 50 million individuals. In Clark County alone, almost 15% of the population faces challenges accessing sufficient nutritious food. The Obodo Collective recognizes these issues and is committed to making a difference.
The Obodo Urban Farm, situated adjacent to the new store, plays a crucial role in supplying fresh produce while promoting sustainable farming practices. Cheyenne Kyle, the food programs coordinator at The Obodo Collective, emphasized the importance of providing nutrient-rich foods to the community. The farm cultivates a variety of fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs, and native desert plants. By focusing on local cultivation, the organization ensures that the produce remains affordable and accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. Kyle stated that they are dedicated to creating tangible solutions that benefit the entire community.
Beverly Rodgers, a resident of the area, expressed her appreciation for the new store. She noted that many people in the neighborhood lack reliable transportation or the means to carry groceries home. The proximity of the store makes it easier for residents to obtain fresh food without facing logistical hurdles. Despite rising prices at larger supermarkets, Kyle assured that the produce at the new store will remain reasonably priced. Customers interviewed by Channel 13 praised the initiative, highlighting its positive impact on the community. The store’s commitment to affordability and accessibility marks a significant milestone in addressing food insecurity in Las Vegas.
