In Walsh’s absence, Deacon Frey and Vince Gill took on his musical responsibilities. Deacon Frey, who joined the Eagles in 2017 following his father’s passing, delivered Walsh’s famous “Hotel California” guitar solo alongside Chris Holt, a new addition to the guitarists. Vince Gill assumed lead vocal duties for several tracks, including “In The City,” “Life’s Been Good,” and “Rocky Mountain Way.” The only composition removed from the evening’s program was the James Gang classic “Funk #49,” deemed too challenging to execute without Walsh. This was replaced by “Best Of My Love.”
Henley further elaborated on Walsh’s condition, revealing that the guitarist had struggled through most of the previous night’s performance but was eventually unable to finish. He assured fans that Walsh was recovering and urged them to send their well wishes. The band’s performances at the Sphere have been meticulously choreographed with intricate visual displays, leading to a largely fixed setlist. However, certain songs like “The End of the Innocence,” “Those Shoes,” and “Please Come Home for Christmas” have been rotated throughout their residency.
In other group-related news, their initial collection of hit songs has achieved quadruple platinum certification from the RIAA, signifying sales exceeding 40 million units. Henley humorously remarked on this achievement, noting that they might not have been fully compensated for all those sales, attributing it to streaming services like Spotify.
The band is scheduled to resume their Sphere engagements on January 30, providing Walsh ample time for recovery. Their recent performance demonstrated that even without him, the show can continue, albeit with a unique dynamic as Vince Gill performs his parts.
